Heinz Schernikau established HMS in 1995 and from the beginning shaped the company with his professionalism and his charisma. He has been in the international coal business since 1973, more than 40 years.

2011-2013: Co-Founder and CEO Ichor Coal NV, South African Coal producer listed on Frankfurt Stock Exchange
Since 2005: Advisor to the Board of coal producers in Asia, Africa and Europe
Since 1995: founder and CEO of HMS Bergbau Agentur AG in Berlin
1990 – 1995: Board of Directors at Stinnes Intercoal AG
Since 1985: Vice-Chairman of AHB Kohle-Energie Export Import and in charge of all coal, gas and energy trading from and to East Germany (volume: 4 billion Deutschmarks)
1973 – 1989: various leadership positions with foreign trade companies in East Germany
1991: Advanced Management Program INSEAD in France
1973: Masters Degree (Dipl. oec.) in Business Economics and Foreign Trade from the former University of Economics in East Berlin
Throughout his career, Heinz Schernikau has established extensive international contacts and has led and been involved in midsize and large raw material trade deals. He has worked with partners across the globe with a focus on Eastern Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Steffen Ewald – CFO
Steffen Ewald is the CFO of HMS Bergbau AG. Steffen Ewald holds a degree in Business Administration from Rostock University and began his career at a medium-sized international power plant construction company, where he rose to the position of Head of Finance. Prior to joining HMS Bergbau AG, Ewald headed the Group Finance and Reporting division of the German holding of an international media conglomerate.
Dennis Schwindt – COO
Dennis Schwindt is the COO of HMS Bergbau AG. Dennis Schwindt holds a degree in Economics from the Humboldt-University in Berlin. At HMS Bergbau AG, he has been managing several operating projects within the commodity trading area as the company’s authorised representative since 2012. He gained extensive experience in engineering and in the oil and gas industries from his previous positions at medium-sized German companies and international groups.
